Overheat in Stroller/car seat

ORIGINAL POST

My bubs gets easily overheated in her stroller seat / car seat. She gets all sweaty to the point where her hair is damp and her back is so hot. We strip her clothes off but still, she gets hot.

Are there any tricks to keep bubs from getting overheated?

We use the maxicosi car seat.

Thank you very much for your advises.

I don't think she is overheating. She's just hot. My kids (and myself) will all be sweating profusely after a few minutes out in the HK summer. It's perfectly normal.

Sweating is the body's cooling system. As long as you replace the fluids, everything

is normally ok.

As for tricks. These go for adults as well.

- Stay in the shade in the middle of the day and avoid strenuous activity.

- Give plenty of fluids. Water is best.

- Use a sunhat.

- Clothe her in lightweight natural fabrics. Loose fitting garments like loose dresses are best.

- Be aware of the signs of heatstroke. Here's an article about that: http://www.medicinenet.com/heat_stroke/article.htm .

i've placed a bamboo mat on the stroller but it doesn't help that much. u might consider getting ur baby a little fan to attach the the stroller. (the ones taht are kid safe).

as for the car seat, i just turn up the air con!

the thick padding used is just not very adaptable for hk weather. tehre's not much u can do.

I'd like to reiterate axpatguy's point about replenishing fluids -- if you ever notice your kid is NOT sweaty, get her inside and get her a drink pronto.

The funny thing is that I see the same thing in reverse in HK that I used to see foreigners do in my native Sweden in winter. There is this "fear of climactic extremes." Lots of winter visitors to Sweden seemed convinced that one couldn't survive in those temperatures, and that it was somehow dangerous for kids. This in a country where babies routinely take afternoon naps outdoors in temperatures well below freezing. The Swedish Army has a saying: "There's no bad weather, just bad clothing".

Heat is not dangerous per se. Baby is not going to suffer unless he/she is bundled up and dehydrated. Sweat is a good thing. The simple solution is to give kids plenty of water, and shower them (and adults) twice a day if they play outside and change clothes often. Heck, I sweat like the proverbial pig and the humid heat feels oppressive but as long as I drink enough water I know I'll be fine. It's discomfort, not danger.

Hi everyone. Thank you so much for the advises certainly was a comfort for me! Will make sure she has enough fluid.

I am a first time mom and the first time to deal with a baby in my whole entire life so for many things, I don't know what is OK. Especially when SIDS is so highlighted, I am so jumpy about bub's temperature!! Don't want my precious one get it when I can prevent it!

Thank you so much and have a great weekend!

"I don't know what is OK."

I know it sounds silly but in most cases if it feels right to you as a Mom it is right. Common sense gets you far.

There are also plenty of books on the subject. One trick I use if I think a kid is sick but I am really not sure is to call the nurses at our doctor's office. They are good for a reality check and don't mind taking 2 minutes on the phone to help.

"I am so jumpy about bub's temperature!!"

Well, there's a difference between skin and core temperatures. To take the cold example, even a kid with freezing feet will have quite normal core temperature. And the latter one is the one that "counts". I'm not suggesting that you take baby's rectal temperature all the time of course. ;)

Babies are pretty good at regulating their own temperature. Make sure you remove layers when you go outside and add layers when you enter air conditioned spaces. In cold weather you would do the opposite.

my baby used to sweat a lot in the carseat and stroller. i now use a wool matt for the stroller, and surprisingly, it keeps my baby's back quite dry!! i don't have one for the carseat yet, so he still gets sweaty in the carseat.

i got it at bumps to babes. it looks quite furry and many people in the streets look at it funny because they think it's hot for the baby. only if they knew!

I have seen those furry ones and yes my reaction was "???????" ( maybe I saw you frenchfries ; ))

Thank you for the tips and comfort everyone, I have started out with giving enough liquid, carrying around wet clothes, make sure she has a hat on but, now her inside the hat gets so steamy like a sauna. Maybe I have a baby that is high metabolic....

Went to B2B/Mothercare to get the above mentioned gadgets. I saw a seat padding with ventilation holes in it so got it, will try it out. I will get the wool mat for the stroller!!

I think your baby is quite normal. :)

A hat is fine but if baby is sitting in the stroller a nice shade or a parasol is better. You avoid the steamy head effect you describe.
