Beach or City holiday with 1 year old??

ORIGINAL POST

Next month, we are planning on taking a holiday with our baby who will turn 1. We are quite divided between picking a beach destination or a city destination. Our baby loves the water, so it feels like a nice villa in a beach resort would make sense, but city hotels have pools as well, right?

Any comments pls?

I would go with the beach. City holidays tend to be a lot of sightseeing. Fun for you but your 1-year old could care less.

Posting the same message to the other post requesting advice about a beach holiday with a baby:

"One thing that put us off a beach holiday when our baby was little is that we thought we would be forever stuck in the hotel room as the baby slept every 3 hours. If you are in a villa or something where you can be outside by the pool and have the baby monitor to listen to the baby sleeping inside then that would be great but villas are expensive. We have held off going on a beach holiday until our baby is 18 months so that he is down to one 2 - 2.5 hour nap a day so only one stretch stuck in the room (often too hot for them to sleep outside in the stroller). A pool access hotel room might be a cheaper option than a villa but allow you to be on the balcony or at the edge of the pool and still be in listening distance from the monitor."

The same may apply for a one year old if they are having 2 sleeps in the day. Need to consider what you are going to do in the hotel room while they sleep. Maybe fine if you are happy reading or reliving your honeymoon (quietly!)!

I would definitely vote for a beach holiday- we are about to take our 2nd one with now an 8 month old. If your baby can sleep in the stroller or the carrier- you are never hotel room bound.

As for villas with swimming pools- we considered it but decided that it was too much of a risk having a crawler or a recent walker as 8-12month olds might be, to wander off towards the pool and god forbid we took our eyes away for a second. Big pools- you are going there with the baby with a purpose, most likely to swim and you are much more careful. Plus there are so many people around- so much fun for the baby to observe and participate.

Thank you for all your responses. When our son was 9 months old, we went for a beach holiday and got a one-room villa (the hotel was offering an excellent promotion), and it worked out great for us. Since we had such a good experience with that arrangement, we were tempted to go with a similar option, but thought it would be good to look into something different.

It's good to hear what everyone has to say on this. We will research a beach holiday.

oh, and 788, when u're in the villa, u can keep the windows to the pool closed at all times, unless you are all going to be in the pool area. when we went with our crawler to the pool villa, we had no problems. maybe with 2 babies, it might be different, i guess......

That really depends on how the villa is designed. In many places there is no barrier.

axptguy38, didn't know that! all the villas i have been to in south east asia had sliding windows! so, i guess we should always check with the hotel if there are barriers in their villas. thanks for the comment!

Many many villas, especially on Bali, have only a few steps from the outdoor living room to the pool.

Here's one example http://www.elitehavensbali.com/elitehavens/elitehavensbali/template/image.asp?VillaName=VillaKubuTwo&ImageNumber=5

Hi frenchfries, we are about to go on our first beach holiday as well. How did you sterilize bottles? In nyc, they gave us a microwave in our room.

hi, -sa

i breastfeed, so no headache of sterilizing bottles! :)

for my baby's bowls and utensils (my baby was 7 months, and thus, on solids), i used baby dish washing detergent i brought with us. i also took bottled baby water for my baby to drink.

even when my baby used to take the bottle with pumped milk, i never sterilized those bottles, anyways.

if u're staying in a pool villa of some sort, u might get a microwave with it. the villa we stayed at had a small kitchen with a microwave, fridge, sink, etc..

As frenchfries says, sterilizing is not needed. Hand washing like any other dish makes bottles quite clean enough.

So called "sterilizing" (because it really isn't) of bottles only came about because health authorities needed to teach "the masses" about basic hygiene and boiling was the simplest way.

I know... I definitely miss breast feeding in that respect!:) But I am glad to have switched to bottles now- am finally free to run/ cardio exercises as I really needed to. Its good to know that there is no need for sterilizing. Well, we air dry anyway, so all the benefits of sterilizing probably go out of the window. More than any other part of the bottle, for some reason I am mostly concerned with the nipple opening not getting clogged with stuff. I have it in my head that boiling will not let any non desirable creature make home there. I know, I know... its kinda of silly!;)

Nothing wrong with being a bit too cautious. Then again, think of the fact that babies put EVERYTHING in their mouths. They ingest a lot of dirt with no ill effects. ;)
