Look at what kinds of things your kid is eating now. Bread? More difficult to eat than cake. I made my daughter carrot cupcakes for her first, as she had not yet been introduced to the joys of refined sugar, and I didn't want to overload her.

You one year old can absolutely eat cake. Just watch out for allergies and overeating.

As Z says a small cupcake may be wiser. ;)

Maybe not everything....

Family lore has it that while my family was in Paris [France, not Texas] for my sister's first birthday, my mother sent my father out to buy a cake for her. My folks are the very definition of teetotalers, and he somehow came back with a brandy-soaked cake, which they didn't realize until the four children had already begun to demolish it. Obviously they couldn't pry the cake out of our little paws, but they were handling the situation as gracefully as possible until 5-year old me turned to my mother and said beatifically "Mama, this is the best cake I have ever eaten!"

This was the last time my mother let my father choose the birthday cake.
