hi I have 2 nieces coming to visit for 4days and I need to come up with places to take them. I have no kids myself (yet) so am completely clueless.

They are 4 and 2.5yrs- girls, due to the heat, alot of outdoor activities like hiking are out- their mother's instructions.

Are they any shaded parks/ playgrounds that are suitable for that age?

Hong Kong side prefered as I will have to take them everywhere and honestly a trek to Kowloon in this heat is too much for me.

advice REALLY appreciated!

Playtown is good. Indoor play area with climbing frames, balls and lots of toys. It is near Belchers in the Westwood mall (I think). If you do a search for Playtown Hong Kong you should find it. I am struggling to find things for my 16 month old to do in this heat also. Maybe lots of sunscreen and a trip to a public pool? There is one in Kennedy Town and Wan Chai I think.

I know you said "mother's instructions" but I must point out that heat isn't dangerous per se. Dehydration and excessive sun exposure are. My kids (3½ and 2) are often out in the middle of the day. A sun hat, suncreen, staying in shade or half-shade and finally lots of water will prevent most problems.

Ironically I can now only think of outdoor activities. Sorry! But they are shady.

Botanical Gardens and Hong Kong Park. While you will get sun, there are lots of trees and big buildings around, so a surprising amount of shade.

I know you said no hikes but many (most?) hikes on the island are shady since you walk among the trees most of the time.

The Ocean Park lowland side, with kids' world, also is quite shady due to the big mountain directly to the southwest. Headland side is sunny though.

A pool!

Take them to the museums.

The Science Museum in TST is the best. I have been taking my boy there since he's 2 and we have fun every time. There are so many hand on things that young kids can do!

The Museum of Coastal Defence in Shau Kei Wan is a great one as well. It has an indoor part with great displays and an outdoor path with great views. You can pack your lunch and have it in the cafe or in the outdoor area. When it gets too hot, can always get inside to cool down.

I like the Museum Of Coastal Defence, but do not think it has enough to keep the interest of kids that young. The lower floor of the science museum is good though.

Disneyland for that age is great, and lots of shaded things to do there, the rides and queues are mostly inside, like Its a small world, Buzz lightyear, Winnie the pooh, are great for that age. The Lion King show, the Golden Mickeys, The 4d film show, are all inside.

The beaches, go early morning, or late afternoon. There are many public swimming pools.

Agree with axpatguy though, HK is hot in the summer, you just have to live with it. Just take all sensible precautions, and go about normal life.

I would strongly recommend Playtown in Westwood Mall, Belchers Street near pokfulam. A great place for kids to spend a few hours while the parents can just sit back, relax and chat. There's even a thai restaurant next door for a quick flavourful bite !

Go to Shek O beach AFTER 3:30 pm, the heat goes away but the waters generally remain warm enough for a nice dip.
