very odd indeed:

Check these guys and ask for Jason Li. I just deal with him and experience him as rather aggressive and knowledgable.

There are a lot of property "lawyers" in HK who are more like conveyancers. They basically make their money from hk's flipping property speculation. I don't if this is the type of firm you came across. They are basically factories churning through paperwork and their offices are very badly fitted out and the lawyers use yahoo mail accounts for work purposes.

The ID thing is common practice. Supposedly for verification re money laundering related compliance.

The only professionals who ask for cash up front are prostitutes. Any lawyer that asks for the fee up-front is a not worth working with. Real lawyers get agreement to proceed and then send invoices.

Referals on message boards can be manipulated by interested parties. They should be verified with a few well researched questions before committing cash.

I would not necessarily agree with the complaints about the cash up front policy. A lot of reputable firms (including some magic circle international firms) are now requiring a retainer in this economic climate to stop clients skipping out on the bills. This is particularly the case for new clients. Agree re the money laundering point. Firms need to ascertain the identity of a new client from passports or ID cards and often address details from utility bills. No

Still, this should all be requested by the actual lawyer you have an appointment with once they have met with you at the allocated time.
