I always use the plastic bags I get from shopping as rubbish bags. I am very supportive of the reduction in the use of plastic bags, so I am not happy about buying plastic bags simply for rubbish bags. I'm nearly out of my supermarket plastic bags...
Does anyone have any environmentally friendly (but also convenient) alternatives?

Do what people do in many European countries, where they have to pay to dispose of rubbish. You leave all excessive packaging at the supermarket counter. That sends a clear message that you don't intend to dispose of that packaging yourself, and encourages supermarkets to put pressure on the suppliers to reduce packaging.
You can still get a bag for your rubbish, but without excessive packaging the quantity of rubbish you need to dispose of is greatly reduced.
Why should we pay to get more ribbish bags when most of the stuff that ends up there is unwanted in the first place??
I'd say, leave it at the supermarket, as i do..

I cant recall where i bought them but I recently purchased biodegradable plastic garbage bags - could have bee in 360 market....
These will degrade in less than a year, you have to store them out of the light because that accelerates the process.

I have purchased the biodegradable plastic bag liners as well. Though they are not as thick as some bags from places like Mannings or 360, they are stronger than those bags from wellcome and P&S. Its a pain having to remember to bring your own to the grocers and no purse to carry it in either when I do remember.

I have my trusty CitySuper insulated bag (a must have if you are walking home with ice cream/dairy/frozen chicken and btw why does no other supermarket offer an insulated bag?) and my backpack. I very rarely buy plastic bags because as trash bags they suck. I buy good trash bags that aren't easily pierced at Gateway. So I don't really see the problem. But that's just me.
