Speech Therapist- what do they do in their 1st consultation "assessment" session?

Hi..i want to bring my 2 year old boy to a speech therapist. actually, i went once, and it turned out it was a fruitless session, with little advice on how to encourage my son to talk, or rather, she gave common sense approach which we have already tried at home.

so this time, i want to be more prepared when searching for a good speech therapist. it seems like the 1st session invovles 'assessment' on the child. i would like to know what do they do on the 1st session which you find it useful. or what criterias do you use to determine a GOOD speech therapist? what questions should i ask before booking a session with them?

I took my little boy to one a couple of weeks ago in HK - he speaks both English & Cantonese (he is 4 1/2) - one comment she said was that some views on the therapy were that it should start at 6!

She then did some assessment with getting him to take toys out of a bag to see how he formed words - after a while she then moved onto pictures and did a similar assessment.

She needs to see him again and do the same test - to make sure her findings are accurate. Ultimately she thinks she can help - there will be tongue & mouth exercises too plus she said she'd teach us parents how to help too!

Good luck!

my son is 4, and has been going to speech therapy since he was about 2.75 years old. we've gone through 3 of them. the first one was great, she connected well with him, although i found it a bit hard to connect with her! (which doesn't matter, as i wasn't the 'client'!). she unfortunately left to go back to her home country, so we got another one from the same clinic. she was ok, although i felt she didn't connect as well with my son, and also i could spot some bad grammar in her speech, which i wasn't very impressed with!!! (she was local but trained o'seas). then i tried another one (made sure she was a native speaker!) and we have been going to her for a year now and we love her. she connects well with my son, and also with me! she has provided such valuable service and advice. she conducts testing periodically to test how he is fairing on the age appropriate speech bell chart etc.

anyway so my advice is just to go with your gut feel, make sure they have good accreditation. try out a few if u need to.
