I can only speak for Canon. Anyway 350D is a way old model. It's 500D now. We have a 450D and love it. It doesn't have all the fancy features of the 40D but enough for the non-professional/gifted amateur.
If you really get into photography, lenses and other accessories are going to be your big cost item. The same lenses can be used on all the Canon Eos DSLRs. So you can buy lenses for your 500D and then upgrade camera without it costing too much.
For reliable shop, you could do worse than Fortress. They'll throw in an extra battery and a cheap case. Get a set with a cheap kit lens to start, then upgrade later with a 2nd hand lens at a place like Mirama Camera on Stanley Street.

Canon 50D is nice. Also the 500D is good if you are a novice.

Although I have Canon gear, I advise Canon or Nikon as they are the most popular. You are bound to find an abundant of 2nd hand stuff as well as many friends will probably use canon and nikon and thus, you can borrow stuff
