Can someone tell me what is the consequence of drving with an expired registration if one gets pulled over by a cop or gets a parking ticket? How much is the fine and does the car gets towed, thanks

If you now realise that your registration has expired, it's probably best not to drive the car until you renew it, as that is illegal! Not only that, but I think that if you have no registration, then your car insurance is probably invalid. You could be in all sorts of trouble if you get caught, or even worse ... have an accident! It's not worth the risk ... leave the car at home until you renew the registration.

There is a fee to pay after the registration ends. When you fill in the registration you can fill in the form claiming you didn't drive during the period and want to have the fee waived.. The fee is only 20 or 30 HKD per day.. So No, it s not illegal but I don t know for how long.
My guess is if you re not checked there s no way of them knowing you drove.. But then as the cost is low, I just paid it last time.. (I renews 10 days after expiry)
All documents are on the Transport Department website.

if you have an accident, the insurance company will request the back side of your registration document to verify that the license fee has been paid to date. If this is not there they may argue the policy is not in force, although if there is a bodliy injury case they would likely be forced to settle it and then seek a recovery against you.

You are quite right ... if the car is off the road after expiry of registration, due to repairs for instance, then it is not illegal, and you can fill in the form claiming that it was not driven due to having repairs. It does however mention that they may ask for bills/invoice as proof of this.
On the other hand, if your car is in fact on the road and you are stopped by police for whatever reason and your registration has expired, then I think you will find that to be illegal!!

I've forgotten to renew mine several times, usually by a few days, once by nearly a month. I always admitted that I'd driven it, just had to pay the extra (not much), then the new licence starts from the day you apply not from the date the old one expired, so in essence the fine is in payment of the tax that you should have paid but didn't. Its worked well for me forgetting for a month, as mine used to be due in january, always a strain after xmas, now its feb.

Surely your insurance policy will not be valid without a current license? I would have thought that was a bigger concern.
There is a fairly expensive car parked next to mine, and i happened to look at the car's license - it expired in the middle of 2006. doesn't make sense to me...

I m not really sure what proof they want if you say youi haven't driven the car.. If it s just been sitting in your parking, there s not much you can say..
This year I paid the fee. Last year I didnt and wasn't asked for any proof.
