Anyone had any experiences with dying your own hair? Which are the best products? Pros and cons? I'm looking to cover my highlights (and a few greys!) and go back to dark brown-black hair. Never done it before and it seems like a cheap alternative of getting it done at a salon. Heard that ammonia free products fade really fast - true?

I've been using them for years and my hair hasn't fallen out ... yet! I got sick and tired of spending $$$$ at the salon and now spend about $50 on a box every 4-6 weeks (whenever the grey starts to show through!). My hairdresser actually compliments me on how well I do it and what a nice colour it is! I normally use L'Oreal or Revlon. However, if you already have highlights I would use caution as there is a possibility that the chemicals could have an adverse reaction ... certainly you would need to do a test first (which you should do anyway), but I'd be more inclined to ask you hairdresser for advice first ... or at least wait until your highlights have grown out.
