Doesn't seem that bad to me. Even if it's only one bedroom and two blocks their fixed costs for the move remain. I can't imagine that two bedrooms and across the island would cost them that much more.

As for suggestions, there's the bunch of friends with a rental van and a case of beer model.

Thanks for the response. I don't think the case of beer is my style. But reallly! Its really quite a lot!

Seems about right. The two block distance is largely irrelevant... you're not getting charged for the drive, but for the labor to load, unload, etc.

i dont know what standards people have on this website, but we did a move of a whole 500 sqf apartment 5 blocks. it took 3 hours for them to do and cost us 1350 HKD

just look for moving companies trucks on the street and note down their number which you usually find on the truck.

you have to speak cantonese though...

Each time we've moved it was around $8k, but the last time was a few years ago, and that was from a 4 to a 4 bedroomed place, so $5k seems about right. But definately get other quotes, when we last moved Crown were more than twice what we paid. Would recommend Magnum Movers, or Jumbo, have used both twice and they were both excellent.

I had a suspicion cookie 09 that that would be the case. When I had my furniture shipped here I had a briliant crew pack everything for shipping and even with Australian labour prices I did not pay that much.

There is a large discrepency in quotes out there. $5K seems high.

And whoever you sign up with, make sure you know that they will COHERSE you into giving a gratuity at the end. To be asked for tips by grown men can be very embarrasing, unless you have the savviness to anticipate it. So, don't get pushed into this situation.

So, bring the number to the bare minimum and suggest you know the trade norm to tip, if satisfied.

I worked with one mover that i am very satisfied with. They did not expect tipping, no white glove service, but very courteous. And all the moving staffs have been in the same team for years (ie not casusal labor).

Signs of a bad move, theyask to be excused half way to load someone else and to return hours later, tired and rushing to finish your job. Make sure this is discussed upfront. I threatened to fire and withold the balance of money when he suggested this formula.

I used cheap movers once and it was a total nightmare. 5k will seem very cheap after you've seen your prized 8k speakers thrown out of a van. Moving is extremely stressful and it's always better to pay professionals.

Call a local mover. A 600 sft content cost only around 1,000 - 1,200. I remember I used Kin Tat last time. Check it out.
