I am visiting a friend in Hong Kong in about a month and I'd like to bring him some stuff from New York. Anything in particular that you really miss, or would love if someone brought you? Suggestions appreciated, thanks!

I am having a hard time thinking of a US "consumable" that I can't get hold of at Gateway. What about one of those huge tubs of Twizzlers?

Hah yes, I agree--we went to Gateway last time I visited (I brought freshly ground peanut butter), and there is nothing you can't get. I will look into the Twizzlers. If only I could freeze some bagels and lox and bring them over =)

I don't guess you could bring over a Walmart or Target? Ha ha.
For me, whenever I go to the States, I stock up on toiletries that I can't get here like my favorite brand of shampoo, toothpaste and feminine products. My husband also prefers a certain kind of aftershave. The selection is just not the same in Hong Kong. Sure there is shampoo, etc. but maybe not what your friend is accustomed to using. Also, certain medicines like Tylenol Allergy and Sinus I can't find here. I would suggest asking him... he may be relieved that you asked. Also, if he is married or is living with a partner, maybe she has a similar list of "essentials" she would like.

Thanks all for the great responses--although I wanted to surprise him, I think I will just ask him to email me with some things he likes. I was also thinking that maybe, just maybe, I could in fact bring him some bagels from New York, taking them out of the freezer right before I leave for the airport. Thanks again for your ideas!

I seriousl think that all shampoo, toothpastes etc EVEN IN THE SAME BRAND are made for Asia - diluted. I have actually did some careful compairsons. US toiletries are the best. I bring back shampoo and toothpaste each time !!!
Agree with Leaving on a JP - Wish he can bring back Target Store. Home Depot too, instead of having to pay rip off prices here in Wanchai !
