I'm thinking of buying a games machine for my sainted mother. She'll only want to play simple things like tetris - none of that downloading, file sharing, multiplayer malarky.
Should I go for a Nintendo DS Lite or the new Nintendo DSI? I assume the former is going pretty cheap nowadays, not that my mother's not worth the extra...
I also assume that the machines I might buy in 188 Wanchai would be the real deal if they come in a nice box and all. Or should I be wary on this count? She'll also be playing with it in Europe (not UK).

Is your mother a hardcore gamer?
If she is: I would opt for a modified PSP. With a modded PSP, you can play nearly every nintendo, super nintendo, sega genesis etc. game there is. Not to mention, all of the PSP games that can be downloaded from the net. You can also watch movies, surf the internet, listen to music and even make phone calls. -The list goes on and on. And yes, she can even play tetris.
However, if she's not a hardcore gamer: consider getting her a digital camera/recorder or the like -- if you are set on something tech/electronic, that is.
Pearls are always a nice gift -- one that can be 'checked for authenticity'.

Definitely softcore and I'm set on getting her something to play games on that doesn't also act as a phone, video recorder, calendar, modem etc. Just games really. She misses her gameboy and I thought I'd get her an updated version.

If that's the case, i think your mother will like NDS Lite. Because other than Tetris, NDS also has many easy amd funny games that mama would like.

Thanks Francis, that was my thought but I'm trying to find out if it's worth going for the newer DSi, which will play the same games and I believe has a better screen, buttons etc. But costs more. Is it worth the extra if Ma only want to play simple tetris style games?

Hi Dive, to me, my mama is happy enough with NDS Lite.
I think it depends on how much time your mother is going to spend with it. If she is playing it "everyday" and "all the times", it will be better to get her one with a better screen. If she just plays it periodically, NDS Lite will be good enough.
By the way, if the difference between DSi and NDS Lite is slight, its not worth to spend more to buy the new one. As you know, the price of these gaming device drops quickly~~ ^_^

I think you should propabaly just get her a DS lite(only $990 from fortress). Because your mother will propabaly not want to use the camera and it's like $800 more
