Small bugs in dried foodstuffs

ORIGINAL POST

Have noticed in the past week or so lots of small bugs in some of our dried foodstuffs - cat biscuits, flour, cereal etc. These packages are not left open, but were all sealed with plastic air-tight clips.

Any idea what these little beggars are? Have had to bin most of the food in the cupboard and have bleached out the actual cupboard, but not sure how to prevent them coming back.

Not sure what Rentokil / pest contraol can do, and also I am 34 weeks pregnant, and we have two cats, so makes using chemicals hard.

Thanks

Check that the air tight clips are really air tight. There are often tiny openings anyway.

We have found that the only truly air tight, or at least bug tight, option is plastic containers like Lock n Lock or the like from Japan Home or the grocery store. Importantly, get some big ones for flour and sugar. As soon as you get the package home, transfer it to the container. Flour packages are particularly sensitive. Even unopened they can get bugs as soon as you come home.

Have not had bug problems in food since we put everything in such. Still a few ants in the cupboard (can't get rid of ALL the crumbs) but since they're not in the food it's no biggie.

Those little bugs are weevils and in many cases they or their larvae are already in the bag when you buy them. So anything prone to getting infested like flour etc should be put into the freezer for a few days to kill them. It does work. Other stuff that can't go in the freezer should be put into air tight containers.

If however you already have an infestation in your cupboard, you'll need to throw out all the affected food and use a product for killing weevils on the shelves.
