Does anyone know where in HK I can buy fresh monkfish? I have been buying it at citysuper where it is sold pre-frozen, however I would prefer fresh. Thanks.

Monkfish has a great texture and fab taste. Not that "fishy". Oven baked recipes work very well in my opinion. You can find some good recipes on the web.

Sometimes frozen fish is fresher than "fresh" - provided that it has been frozen immediately after catching, and handled and stored properly during the journey to the retailer, and afterwards.

Yes, I've recently discovered monkfish, and I saw a recipe in this weekend's SCMP which described it as 'poor man's lobster'. Last night I wrapped in in proscuitto ham and baked it in the oven. It's a really nice fish, very delicate flavour.

It's popular in the UK and it also comes from NZ (as in the citysuper stuff) so I'm guessing it's probably a cold water fish and not found in the waters of this part of the world. I imagine it's likely only available pre-frozen here but I thought I'd try. It's OK pre-frozen but I'm of the opinion that freezing spoils the texture of fresh fish, even if it retains the freshness and flavour.

I buy mine from Southstream Seafoods Ltd. You can order online or give them a call. They may not always have fresh monkfish though as it depends what the fishermen catch each week, and then it's flown in fresh from NZ or Aus. But if they haven't caught what you want, they do also sell frozen fish.
