Urgent: Ceiling Fan questions

ORIGINAL POST

Does anyone know if ceiling fans from US will work in Hong Kong? Hong Kong seems to be 240V while US to be 100-120V. Anything I need to do to make it work?

Thanks a lot.

That depends on the power supply/motor in the fan. All electrical appliances (well, the legal ones) have an info panel/sticker specifying the accepted input voltages. If it says 100-240v you are ok. Otherwise you'll need to change some part of the power circuitry, possibly the entire motor. You might want to give the manufacturer a call. It could be a cheap or an expensive fix.

Thanks a lot for your help! There are a lot more selections in US than in HK and the price is a lot cheaper here!!! :)

As a general rule, crossing the 110-220 boundary is only worth it if:

- The device uses less than 100w so you can use a small transformer.

- The device has a universal power supply that works anywhere.

- You can change a small and cheap part.

I'm no expert on fans, but my guess is they use an electric motor that is made specifically for the voltage, so you'd have to change the whole motor. As mentioned, call the manufacturer.
