I have two cats that are making me miserable - keeping me awake at nights meowing, etc. It's even worse during the day, and letting them out makes no difference. My day started at 3am today ...
We rescued them from the SPCA a couple of months ago, but it hasn't worked out at all. Do the SPCA accept cats back from you? Has anyone else had any experience of this?I really don't know what else to do.

Jeez. Maybe first take them to the vet, make sure they are OK, ask a professional what the problem might be.
Adopting them and taking them back will make them incredibly unsettled and they may prove impossible to rehome, in which case they may be destroyed.
You wouldn't adopt a kid and sent it back would you?!

As JJALD said, talk or take them to a vet. See if there is a problem with them. Are they kittens? Maybe it is taking them awhile to settle in.
At last resort talk to the spca and see if there is anything they may know about them, they didn't tell you.

They might need stimulation, toys or something to do. A cat's day starts at 3am so they can't imagine why you aren't up with them. Rule out basic needs - hunger, clean litter box, no other cats or prey around outside. Then make sure they are stimulated but not scared. It also depends on their background, if they're older they might have had a routine they're trying to emulate. But there are many resources for training a cat or breaking bad habits online, search "cat bahavior meow" in google. A little effort can go a long way. Returning them to the SPCA would probably cause them some anguish. Good luck.

WHen they wake you up what do they want?
Do you go back to sleep and they stop?
If you fed them, do they become quiet?
My 1 y.o. cat wakes me up everyday at 5am. I feed him and he then happily bathes himself and then plays with toys around the house.
BTW, he is crying for Canned food. He always has access to Dry food.
If feeding is what they want, try one of those automatic timer things which opens at a preset time so they can get at their food.
