Ok, so if the fridge is not a great option for bananas, and the heat and humidity means they last about 1-2 days on the dining room table.... whats the solution for a banana lover in HK?

Why is the frig not a great option? Okay for a couple of days. Otherwise, just buy them more often.

Either use the A/C or buy more often as woods99 says.

Buy the smaller bananas (I think they are called Emperor?) - a bit more expensive but they are sweeter tasting and they tend to hold up a lot better in the heat and humidity

Thanks. I'm not sure the A/C is an option when you're out all day, and yes - buying them more regularly - while perhaps not the most creative solution (!!) would work. But I'll give the Emperor bananas a crack. Another one of the world's major issues solved; thanks all.

i peel them and freeze them. they make great shakes when blended while still frozen. and also are nice to eat still frozen... almost like ice cream. can't thaw them and eat them though!

Keep the bananas hanging like they do at the little stores - piece of string through the "wrist" of the hand. This will save one or two, but it's an insoluable problem.

I've not tried this, but my mother in law always separates the bananas (individual them) and store them, without touching each other. That's supposed to make the bananas last longer without bruising.

There are little banana hangers you can buy.

Naturally grown, untreated, bananas ripen very quickly when they are picked. Of course the bananas we buy in the normal way (i.e. not from an organic store, or from a farmers' market) have been treated. Sadly, in trying to keep bananas longer we are going against nature.

No clever ways around, this, unfortunately.

Just finish the bananas in two days... well you don't have to buy that many at once
