Anybody else noticing very slow internet traffic on anything outside of Hong Kong?
I have no trouble with sites like asiaxpat, but its taking me ages to download emails (hosted on a US server) and sites like www.bbc.co.uk.
Did a speedtest, and speeds using HK server no problem but its having trouble even completing the latency test on most US servers...

Hi yes if you are on Netvigator. I just spoke to them and there is a damaged cable due to typhoon/earthquke in the ASia region.
A couple years back it happened.
They told me it happened this afternoon and they have no report back from the maintanece on how long.
This effects sevites outside HK IE US. My friend with I cable no problems and I am not able to login to facebook and if I can get a US site it's slow

It may be PCCW, but here are two steps you should take in any case.
1. In a command windows, enter the command "ipconfig /flushdns". If you have Vista or Windows 7, you need to this as administrator.
2. If that doesn't work, restart modem and router by unplugging the cord, waiting 5 secs, and plugging back in. It will take a few minutes for the connection to be re-established.

Yeah working ok this morning... I guess we'll see whether its ok this afternoon.... leads me to think maybe it wasn't anywhere near the same problem as a couple of years ago.
The cynic in me thinks they did something else wrong and used the typhoon as an excuse.

Just want to say, how come Netvigator such a big company, and its not the first time, still took such a long time to fix the problem!
Please support our advertisers:
Well, these things can take longer to fix than you think. "Big" routing is immensely complex and getting it to work just right takes some pretty specialized skills. That's why certified Cisco Network Engineers can make so much money.
That being said, this one did take quite a while.

My link is getting better, but still very slow to connect other US sites.

I understand....but its really inconvenience and frustrating if you really need to get online. The thing I am diasppointed is netvigator didn't give us an exact date on the recovery of the network.

I agree completely. The fact that it is complicated is no excuse for not keeping customers informed. At most US and European ISPs, news about problems would be right on the home page of the website.

The problem existed again......today! But this time, netvigator did learn a lesson. When I called the CS, there was a disclaimer said that due to some "technological problems" we may experience slow internet surfing.
Did anyone also call the CS?

Well, my problem turned out to be a combination of PCCW trunk lines abroad and my modem. Respliced cables and new modem fixed most of the problem.

"hen I called the CS, there was a disclaimer said that due to some "technological problems" we may experience slow internet surfing."
You often get that when you call the CS. I couldn t connect a month ago during a storm and got that message when I called. When I got through, the guy said he couldn t find anything wrong with the connection. I asked if it could be due to the storm, he said no. When asked why so many other people were having problems, as suggested in the message he told me there was no particular problem.
He eventually said he needed to send someone around. Later I just unplugged the modem and plgged it back and was working.
I never uinderstand why theyc an never help you over the phone. I recently had a problem with a Cisco router, and the CS there went through every setting on the phone until it finally worked. PCCW always has to send someone around to have a look, and always give you a ridiculous 4 hour timeframe a few days later. For someone working it is quite difficult to be home for sucha long period.
