iPhone 3GS Discussion

Got the new 3GS a couple of days ago as an upgrade from the Blackberry, and i have to say its pretty cool. I'm not fully transferred over to 3 network yet, so still using it on Wifi until Friday.

I’d like to check out what apps are good to use in general, and specifically in Hong Kong (English language). I’ll start off:

HK Movie – Pretty good for looking up and searching movies, availability, and even live updating seat maps.

HK Metro Lite – MTR Map.

Cathay Pacific – Check flights, check in directly.

NY Times – If you read this (left wing) paper it’s a great app.

Midomi – hear a song that you want to know the name of? Tap Midori, and it will listen, and come back with the title. Cool toy.

AroundMe – Find bars, restaurants, parking etc. in your vicinity. Could be handy.

Anyone else have some gems?

Why jailbreak? I don't understand why people want to jailbreak unlocked phones! There are some great free apps for iPhone, I've probably deleted more than I've tried.

For messengers - Skype, Yahoo, Fring

For translators - Lonely Planet Mandarin, Translator, KTdict CE

For news - NY Times, Free RSS

For travel there are several MTR apps, as well as China train apps and HK bus apps

HK Apps - HK Weather, HK 720, HK Mark 6

Docs - Documents 2

Dictionary

Camera - Sepia Camera, Darkroom

And of course Facebook App and 1000's of games!

Yeah, i had thought about getting it jailbroken, the fact that it voids the warranty is a little disturbing...

You can use Skype and VOIP over 3G anyway, there are apps for battery %.

I have a customised screen, wouldn't want to customise it anymore! Not sure if there are any apps to background apps but 3GS is so fast anyway that is closes and opens another app faster than returning to an open app on any other phone. My experience anyway.

On the 3GS, the % of battery life comes standard, just change it in the settings. As for As for customising the screen, I dont think its so necessary as to get it jailbroken for...now, Skype over 3g, thats pretty tempting to get the phone jailbroken for.
