Noticing more and more handsets now can serve as modem for PC internet connection, just want to know is this method practical?

Did anyone really use this function? Is there anything need to be careful with when using handset as modem?

Well, I used this function years ago on the road. Bluetooth connection from handset to laptop (cable works too). Well before 3G. And yes, it was practical for email. For browsing, it was slow but doable.

With 3G handsets, it is totally practical. The big thing to watch for is cost. Check that there are no hidden costs if you exceed a certain number of megs per month and so forth. Also note that roaming charges when doing it overseas tend to be vicious.

If you are going to use a cell link as a data link you would be way ahead if you invested in a modem that has a cell radio module built in.

You can either use the same SIM as in your cell or have a copy made so you don't have to keep on swapping the SIM - just remember don't use both at the same time.

I think it is a convenient method if you want to get online "suddenly". Just like last time when I moved to a new flat, while the broadband connection is not ready.

Agreed with axptguy38 mentioned, be aware of the cost. Haha~

I find that in flats there's always someone nearby with an open network. ;)

If the price plan is cheap enough, I may switch it to the unlimited data plan and get rid of the PCCW broadband.

It's good that some mobile carriers already have unlimited data plan offer. You got unlimited data for a fixed price. This could avoid bill shock.

I think its a good idea to join those plan if the entry price is fair. As no one knows what happened once there is problems with your home broadband and you definitely need to get online at that time. Haha~

Thanks all.

As after "The netvigator incident", I am thinking of joining a plan which my handset can turn into modem for "emergency use". As I still have contract with netvigator, so cannot change yet. Woo...

Correct, always check with your carrier, usually they are happy to answer your questions and make sure you are the right person to get their services.
