Putting a room on a roof top

ORIGINAL POST

Looking for recommendations as to who to use to put a room on our 1st floor roof, it's an old style 2 story village house in Sai Kung, there's an area above the kitchen that's ripe for a room. Floor space is around 280 square foot but don't have to cover the whole area.

Could be a ready made room or a tailor made room.

Thanks

I would suggest you go to horizon plaza in apleichau and check for the outdoor shops there. They might have those readymade "garden shacks" to place there. Anything else you put up there is illegal anyhow.

Mr know-it-all (HK mag column contributor) wrote a book 'The little Red Book', which is kind of a yellow pages for hong kong. I remember reading of a few 'roof-top' fixtures suppliers in there. Legally you are allowed to put a fixture on your roof, but it can't be a permanent structure -- so no bricks & mortar but stylish quasi-garages/ glass rooms solidly fixed to the roof fall within the law.

Also consider structural safety issues. Is the roof strong enough to support the weight of another room?

Or things being blown off in a typhoon or winter monsoon

Dear CN,

You mentioned these are legal - how did you find this info regarding glass houses on roofs?

Thanks in advance!

are you after a aluminium frame (most people use white colour) with glass panels?
