Hello!
I have been offered quite a nice free car from someone who thought they were coming back to HK after a couple of years absence. They are now not coming back.
The problem is the car has been off the road for over a year (since June 2008) and the road tax expired at that time (July 2008) - just over a year ago.
Is there a limitation to how long a car can be off the road? Can I just buy the road tax or has it been too long? If it's too late what do I have to do to get it back on the road again?
I understand already that it will need to be MOTd and insured etc, but I don't want to do all that if I can't get it road-taxed!
Thanks in advance to any advice.

There is no limit on how long it has been untaxed. You just have to sign the box on the form declaring that it has not been on the road since it was last taxed.
Get the mechanic to come and collect the car and take it for service and MOT as he can drive it on their garage plates. If you drive it to the garage, you will be breaking the law......and sod's law says......
Once they have given you the MOT (and you know it has passed) you can go to the United Centre and get the car transferred to you. You do need the owners signature on a bunch of docs. And I think you will need a copy of their ID. Then you can also get it taxed. You will need your MOT form, your Insurance Certificate and the Registration document.
It is all pretty straightforward.

Many thanks for your replies.
The main point I need is that there is no registration limitations that a car can be off the road.
Cheers

Spurtio,
Not quite correct. there is a limit of 2 years then the vehicle will be deregistered. It wil have to be inspected for re-registration. If the car is not more than 6 years old then there is no need for a MOT get it insured in the new owners name. Go to the TD, transfer of ownership (you will need the old owner to sign the form downloadable from the web)and pay for the license you can declare that it has been off the road from the expiry of the last license and not have to back pay. However, if it has been used and you get caught then it is a serious criminal offence.

also, the new 1 year registration will take affect from the last expiry date, so you will probably need to pay for the 1 year it was unlicensed as well as the year going forward...

Rasbro,
there is a place on the renewal form to declare that the vehicle has not been used so you don't have to back pay. please read my post above.

The new licence isn't back dated, I've been late renewing mine many times, and the new one starts from the date I've renewed, not the back date.

Thank you CD spot on you can back pay if you want ie if you know the car was given a parking ticket during the time.
Frogot to mention, it might be worth going to the Transport Department first and checking that there are no outstanding fines or warrants on the car.

i did not have that option when i renewed my motorbike license, they specifically told me it would be back dated both times. perhaps i should have told them not to?!

To Rasbro
I've had to pay a 'fine' for it being late, but that is only about $20-30 a day,but the actual date has never been backdated.

CD,
Did you fill in the section on page 2 as I posted above? If not they will not automatically recind the backdate period. If you didn't then it s not thier fault that you did not read the reneawl form properly before submitting it
