Hi there,

I need to by netbook/mini computer and would really appreciate some advice.

We have a computer at home for the major functions I just need a small portable one for wifi internet access and basic word processing on the ferry and around town. So far I have been highly recommended the following:

Lenovo IdeaPad Lite S10-2

Acer aspire

ASUS EEpc (on linux operating system)

HP

any thoughts? It would be good to have some memory but cost is an issue we need to bear in mind!

Many thanks!

Those all sound decent.

Memory is very cheap nowadays so don't skimp. Get 1 gig at the very least, preferably 2.

The major performance hurdle on portables nowadays is the hard drive. An SSD (Solid State Drive) will be MUCH faster but will drive the cost up.

Thanks for your thoughts, very helpful.

I am seriously considering the Lenovo I think. It has 1GB memory and a 160gb 5400rpm SATA HDD - is that still good?

Importantly it also comes with a 6 cell battery and most others only come with 3.

Lenovo is a good brand. This is not a Thinkpad (premium/corporate brand) laptop though.

The hard drive is fine.

- Get an extended warranty if they offer it. If the machine breaks even once it will probably pay for itself.

- Get a padded case/sleeve to protect it. There is a good store in the far corner of the Wan Chai Computer Centre 2nd Floor.

- Get an external USB hard drive to back up your date.

Thanks for that, all sounds good.

Any thoughts on the ACER or HP? all things seem to point toward the Lenovo at the moment.

Looking into the ASUS on the linux operating system - what are the major differeces between linux and others?

ASUS do seem to be much more inexpensive which is a big plus, but only if LINUX is any good for Word etc?

Computers with Linux Operating Systems are cheaper because the OS is (often) free.

If you do decide to buy a Windows Netbook, a suite of free applications can be downloaded from < http://portableapps.com/ >. (Quite legally)

Linux itself is ALWAYS free. However if you get one of the commercial distributions (as opposed to downloading and compiling the OS yourself) you will pay for packaging and support.

Still cheaper than Windows in most cases.

There is no Word for Linux, but there are free alternatives.

Thanks guys, very helpful.

I would be quite happpy with linux I think but will need to read & edit quite a few word & excel documents, and also create some, so it looks like i would need to go for a Windows OS.

So it looks like Lenovo seems to be the best option at the moment.

Does anyone know if the HP 6cell battery upgrade is as bulky as the Lenove 6 cell one?

Thanks!

Why not try the Vodafone netbook?

I think is good value for money if you also need to join mobile broadband.

Yes. I am the vodafone netbook user and I found the experience is quite good. Especially you know, nowadays all netbooks spec are similar.

Seems vodafone netbook has quite a number of positive comments. Thinking of getting one as it is $0 now. Actually for netbook, it is mostly used for daily communications, joining a broadband plan is necessary.

I am also thinking of the ACER netbook. But now I might change my mind to the Vodafone one.

Earlier this year my employer tested several computers including both these models but with both running Windows. All five netbook computers were installed in automobiles or motorcycles.

In the end a decision was made to go with the ASUS netbooks for, including. Acers lack of drivers (for the non-technical they basically connect hardware to the operating system) AND, more importantly, they refused to honour/support certain things with the operating systems.

After using 23 ASUS netbook computers in our vehicles for 6 months with an average of 3,670 kilometres per month on each vehicle we have had no failures.

ASUS is recommended without reservation!

Hello, I need some feedback from you guys...

It's regarding wireless broadband PCCW/Smartone

I need it primarily for youtube videos.

I want to know from you guys if you've tried it yourself . I'm refering to the modem 7.2 mbps speed

When watching YOUTUBE videos. Is it smooth or does it lag?

There's a faster one now from one2FREE with 21mbps. but it's pricey at $498 per month and 2 yrs contract.
