Why would it be great? Not saying it wouldn't be but I don't see a compelling reason why there would be amazing benefits.

Also, Shenzhen is not THAT close. There's plenty of room to grow in between.

this idea was already being discussed several years ago, and with proposals like the lok ma chau loop, increased cross-border rail and road links and easing of restrictions on mainlanders coming to hong Kong, it's quite likely to happen in our lifetime (likely post 2047 imo, negating the Basic Law arguments at least

People who are born and live in sz don't have rights either.

On a practical level, aside from the comments made about the property cartel, which has some truth, but in reality a combined city government could still control land auctions and restrict supply according to the whims of any cartel as they do now.

It would be impossible for the two cities to ever truly combine unless there was a legal framework in place which was common to both, and the likelihood of China, in the short term advancing human, civil and property rights to the level it is at in Hong Kong, well I don't see it happening until the end of my lifetime if ever.

The alternative of Hong Kong suddenly regressing and adopting Chinese law would be catastrophic for the city.
