Hi,
A family recently moved to HK with a 20-month old, planning to stay for at least 2yrs.
Which company/plan offers a good package for internet/mobile/TV at a reasonable price, say:
1. TV: News (CNN/BBC), weather, a channel with cartoons for kids, and at least one other English channel.
2. Mobile: Average number of free minutes. Let's say 600-800 minutes/month.
3. Internet: Good for watching youtube, 6-10 GB of download/month. Good speed for in/out of HK.
Please advice,
Thanks!

PCCW can give you all that in a combined plan. PCCW may not be a fabulous company to deal with all the time but they get the job done.
1. You can pick and choose channels here. Very nice.
2. PCCW Mobile.
3. Depends on your area but in most you can get 6mbit down/640kbit up at least. I easily download more than that per month.
Not that you will sign up for 24 months and cannot alter the plan during that time. Changes to the plan typically mean resetting the 24 month counter to zero.

Thanks axptguy38 for your reply. How would you compare PCCW with other companies considering the price? A friend of mine told me about another company (iCable?) Does PCCW provide a better service (and is it cheaper?)
Thanks!

Well, I've only had PCCW so I don't really know. ;)
As I said, they get the job done. I've had a couple issues with the Internet service (only twice in two years though) they have come out next day and fixed the problem. In both cases resplicing the cable and changing the modem solved it.
PCCW are not really known for their stellar service, but I think they suffer a bit from the fact that they are so big and visible. The complaints get publicity while the 99.99% of people who never have a problem don't say a peep. ;)
As for cheaper or not, I guess it depends on the plan. If you get the whole PCCW package the price is pretty decent. I think, as is the HK way, you'll just have to go to the PCCW store (budget an hour at least) and let them lay it out for you. Then you'll have to compare with iCable.
BTW if you don't have a HKID yet you'll need to leave a few thousand deposit for the cell phone plan, but they refund that after you show the ID.

PCCW is a lot of people will go for, but make sure everything go smooth in setup; otherwise, they don't have very good support.

1. Cable or Pay TV - go for PCCW NOW - you can bundle it with your PCCW Netvigator broadband.
2. I have used CABLE TV and there service is worse than PCCW. Their internet service is also unreliable as you share the bandwidth with your neighbours in the same building.
3. China Mobile is the cheapest and best for 2G mobiles. CSL (1010 or 123) are also very good buy not as cheap I believe. However, for 3G, I would go CSL.
Speed for Broadband - I would suggest 6 or 8 Mb/s

Yes, Netvigator had issues, but in two years that was the only significant disruption I have had. Also I am not sure the sites were blocked. I think the pipe overseas was just very slow for some reason.

I don't understand why Broadband and Cable TV is so cheap in HK.
How do they make money?

Partly, perhaps, because the infrastructure is cheaper. After all, wiring one building complex with 200 families and maintaining that wiring costs a pittance compared to wiring 200 houses.
In any case these services are just as cheap in Scandinavia.
