My computer has started stutering. Like it freezes for 5-10 seconds at a time. Especially when I start a new process, or open a new browser page.
I have recently upgraded to IE8 but I don't know if the problems started simultaneously.
Any advice on
-what the problem might be
-how to identify problem
-how to cure
would be appreciated.

I've had that problem since installing IE 8 too.
So I now use Firefox.

Firefox is much better - you can install here http://www.mozilla.org/

Well, it could be IE8, but it could also be a number of other things.
My top "fix slow computers" tips:
- Run an antivirus check.
- Go to www.iobit.com and download Advanced System Care. Run the various diagnostics.
- Go to http://www.revouninstaller.com/ and get Revo Uninstaller. Use it to uninstall programs you don't use (anymore).
- Also in Revo, go into Tools->Autorun Manager and see what starts automatically. Uncheck what you don't think you need, then reboot. Don't worry, if you "break" something you can just re-check that box and reboot.
- Don't run more than one antivirus/antispam.
- Uninstall any antivirus by Norton/Symantec. Resource hogs all. Sad that.
- Use a "lightweight" antivirus that uses few resources. Avast and AVG are good free alternatives.

One thing I have noticed is that Windows defender has appeared. I am guessing it must have been installed along with IE8.

Windows Defender has been around since Vista came out. It is not related to IE8.

It might just be coincidence, but I have never noticed Windows Defender running scans on my computer before.
I thought it used to just run in the background when surfing. I am not very savvy on IT stuff, so I do not really klnow what is going on.
I have installed Firefox and it is much faster on this site.
I shall uninstall the other stuff over the next few days.
Is it advisable to uninstall MSDefender as well?

Thanks axptguy38
I have made the changes you suggested and all seems to be working well now.

Glad to hear it.
MS Defender tends to work "silently". I haven't heard of MS Defender having much of an impact either way, but heck, anything is worth a try if your machine is slow. ;) As far as I know, though, it will pause if another process needs resources.
