Child Psychologist wanted!

A girlfriend of mine has recently separated from her husband and is still quite devastated about it since she has also found out recently he was probably seeing someone else whilst they were still married. They have a 6yr old boy who she has great concerns about his well being and feels she needs to speak to a child psychologist who has dealt with these issues previously.

I should add that the boy doesnt know about his daddy other than he just left because he doesnt love mummy any more.

Can anyone recommend someone they can both go and see?

Really appreciate any responses.

if the boy doesn't show any signs of being 'traumatized' by the situation, i don't think your friend will need to seek a psychologist just yet.

in the meantime, both parents need to reassure the boy that:

1. they both still love him very much

2. it's not his fault that mommy and daddy are not together

3. he can spend time with mommy or daddy anytime he wishes (depending on the situation)

Main thing is: keep telling him and letting him know that they both love him regardless of them living together or not.

he's goign to show some changes in behavior since it's such a big change in his life, but if his behavior doesn't cause concern, i really don't think seeking a psychologist is quite necessary at this point.

Thanks Cara. You are always so helpful! I have sent her the details of St Johns they have a great new website with all different types of therapy so perhaps they can help.

Michelley - he does show signs of being traumatised - he's become a very angry little boy and is fighting with his friends and various other things his mother has noticed. But thank you for your reply I do appreciate it.

An alternative bit of info...Jadis Blurton in Central is wonderful and will help sort them both out if you choose to visit her. She's fabulous. Her company, Therapy Associates, also has art therapy classes from time to time which help children deal with their feelings.
