Lost & Found – Property with unknown ownership!
Question – is there a law in Hong Kong that pertains to the responsibility for the person finding property which has been lost?
I believe under common law the individual that finds lost or mislaid property in a public place is allowed to keep it, unless the rightful owner returns to claim it. I ask this because I know in some countries the finder of something of value is obligated or even required by law to make a reasonable effort to locate the rightful owner. Which seems like the right thing to do in any case.
The question - is there a law in HK which requires finders to do the right thing?
If so that briefcase I left in the Taxi last week with my mobile phone, business cards, personal communications and documents addressed to me should be returned…. Right? If I want to buy it back!!
