Our friends are returning to Hk after being away for a yr. Prior to leaving they lived in HK for 3 and half yrs, while their visa to stay in HK was still valid they had to leave HK for a yr. On returning back they have had to apply for the visa to stay here all over again (despite the old one being valid). So after another 2 and a half yrs can they apply for permanent residency or the yr away cancels their eligibility for permanent residency?

somebody told me they can be lenient and might make exceptions if ppl have been away only for a yr and the visa was still valid...
