Hi I've just bought a flat in HK and am renovating before I move in. I've got the chance to install a wired network - does anyone have any recommendations of firms that can help me design, install and set up a simple wired home network?

Cheers

What's the cost of getting the installation?

I would think wifi is simpler and no wires.

Alternatively, you could go the home plug route.

WiFi is way slower and more unreliable than wired. If you can wire, do it.

I can design and install the actual cabling/wall panels, do the IP configuration and so on, but I'm not really good with the handyman parts like conduit and making the cables look nice. Then again if you're just putting it inside the walls that's not a problem.

it is slower but it depends on what his surfing activities are like

Hi, thanks for the replies so far. I already have wifi in my current flat but the coverage is patchy due to the size and number of walls/rooms. My new place will be larger so I don't expect the coverage will be any better.

I'll be using the network for centralising media storage and network backups of all the computers in my family, so bandwidth is important. From the reports I've read about home powerline networking, the results seem to be unpredictable. Currently every computer has its own standalone backup solution and I'm going to move it all onto one networked, fault-tolerant RAID setup.

I'm looking for a firm that can do a one-stop shop for design, contracting and installing. Any recommends?

Cheers

Centralized media storage definitely requires wired networking. Sure, you CAN stream video over WiFi but if you have other users doing other stuff you risk jerkiness.

Make sure you get gigabit switches that support Jumbo Frames, and don't remember to turn Jumbo Frames on in all the devices. Makes a huge difference when it comes to large file transfers.

As I said I can design and install all that. Heck, my own home is pretty much wired like you say you want, with central storage, home theater pc, central backup and so forth. PM if interested.

Without a doubt ETHERNET! "

Whilst you are digging holes why not insert a 1" diameter plastic conduit /plastic pipe so you can add cabling for telephone or co-ax for video?

Using WiFi has its downsides, especially in a congested building from interference from other users. You should also consider security as WiFi, in the majority of installations, can be 'cracked' in a couple of minutes tops. I travel frequently and I cannot remember when I last actually had to pay for WiFi access. I have software that I run and before I have finished a coffee it has spit out the passwords of networks that are within range

Using power lines as network connections is also subject to others not using the same configuration on your side of a building power transformer.

You can't beat your own set of wires and they are a kiss to install these days. AND it has the capacity for densest traffic which is not the case in the other suggested alternatives.

Agreed with all Highway-9 says.

The only thing slightly tricky about installation for a novice is configuring the network cards to support Jumbo Frames. The payoff in performance is quite significant.
