starting with solids: schedules

We have a 6 month old daugther and have started with rice cereal. As we introduced solids at 8.30pm (at the moment the only solid feed, rest is milk), we cancel de midnight bottle, but she wakes up at @ 5-6am, when with the midnight feed she woke up at @7am, so we are thinking to put back again the midnight bottle. Any recommendation?

(BTW, her feeds before the solid introduction: 7.15h - 11.15h-4pm-8pm-12pm)

I would say solids in the morning, not the evening. You'll get milk in her than solids in the evening.

People usually say start introducing solids around the 11am feed - so drop that milk feed and have solids. This is so that if the baby has a problem with the solid food, they will have a tummy upset during the day time, and not at night time when it will wake them up.

I agree with above posts. I dropped the 11am bottle, then the 3pm bottle, then the morning bottle and now my child is 1 year old and i still give the 7pm bottle, just after bath and ready for bed. I feel its a comfort way of sending them off to sleep with warm milk, also fills them up for the night so they'll sleep right through. Agree with 'Slammy', any solids problems can be dealt with in the daytime rather than at night.

better to introduce solids during the day, when baby's not too tired, not too hungry.

when i starting giving my babe solids, i did it after the 'lunch' feed (11 am). So i would try the solids on her at around 1:30 so it wouldn't interfere with her next milk feed. Then once she started eating more solids to a point where i felt it would be enough for a meal, then i moved it up to replace teh 11 am milk feed.

but i kept her midnight feed until around 8-9 months.

when i dropped her midnight feed, i would feed her solid food dinner at 6:30, then feed her bottle at 8 pm then put her off to bed.

i got a 6 months old boy and feed him rice cereal with fruit in the morning after about 150ml of milk. I give him more solids for lunch vegetable w pasta around 11:30am but still continue giving him 180ml milk as well. The solids he is taking currently are not enough to drop the milk feed completely at that time. He's off to bed at 7:30 pm after having another 180ml and has an additional night feed of 150ml milk at 10:30pm. I used Gina Ford's guidelines on introducing solids for both my kids and it works well.

I also loved the Gina Ford Book of Weaning as it has a very easy to follow step by step guide on what and when to introduce solids (day by day and week by week depending on the age you start). It was perfect for me for a first baby as I had NO idea what to do and helped with reducing milk etc as solids increase. It is sold everywhere Dymocks, Bumps to Babes etc.

Giving your daughter rice ceral at 8:30 pm is probably not the best idea .

When starting solids the usual advice we give to Mum's is to pick baby's hungiest time of the day during daylight hours.

Generally a good rule of thumb is between 1100hrs -1200hrs . This also has the advantage of being able to see if the baby has an allergic reaction to the food being offered . You might also be better trying whole foods with your daughter such as bananas, sweet potato , avacardo as these carry more nutitional value than rice cereal .

You would be very welcome to attend Well baby Clinic to see if we could sort out a better schedule for you to introduce solids to your daughter .

with best regards ,
