My external Hard drive (LaCie) when connected to my mac doesn't register. Is there a way to extract the data without sending it to the manufacturer in US. I have about 2 yrs of my work loaded on it . I need help!

a bit late perhaps, but why does it not register? could be any number of things... does the drive actually spin when you plug it in? if not try tapping it a few times and plugging it in, a drive that sat for a long time or has worn will often start spinning and remain running until the next time you shut it down... if it does spin up try a different interface, if it has more than 1... try a different external case...

all these fail or still no idea, take guy38's advice.

First. stop doing anything else with the drive. Don't try to get it to work by yourself. Bring it to an expert to extract the data for you. This might cost a few thousand$$$ but if the data is important, well only you can judge. I made the mistake of trying to get mine to work and ended up scratching it too much that no data could be extracted. There are places in Wan Chai Computer Centre and 298 that will do this service for you. No charge for inspection but if they can get stuff back they will give you estimate. The work should be done in clean environment though.
