Roses lime juice

Does anyone out there know a shop in Hong Kong that is still stocking Roses Lime Juice - a key ingredient of the Lime Soda which is such a refreshing drink at the end of the day. Every so often there is a glich in the supply and now the New Territories is out, Kowloon is out and my survey of the Island drew a blank!

The places I would try, especially the first:

- Oliver's in Prince's Building.

- CitySuper in IFC.

- Great in Pacific Place.

It often seems to happen that a particular item is out of stock everywhere - e.g. one brand of strawberry jam disappears off the shelves as soon as the new shipment arrives. It seems that all supermarkets run out at the around the same time. Will keep my eyes peeled for Roses if I'm out and about today...

Until you find a new supply, do you not like fresh limes squeezed into cold water/soda with a sugar and water syrup added if you like it sweet? Not Roses, but it's healthier as you're getting a blast of vitamin C and can choose how sweet to make it.

Many thanks for your replies. Axptguy..I was in Great in Pacific Place on Saturday and none there and City Super IFC the same. Thames is correct and this is something that Hong Kong does quite well in order to frustrate the expats. I do actually cut up fresh limes to add to the lime soda so I am getting my blast of Vitamin C...I just find that limes alone do not give enough flavour.

Interestingly I posted my question on Facebook and it was picked up by a friend in America who googled Roses Lime Juice in Hong Kong! He forwarded the first link and that was for Soho Wines and Spirits which advertises Roses on their website. I have phoned them up this morning but the person who answered the phone did not know what the stock levels are so I have to phone back later today. What excitement. NB I do do other things apart from drinking Lime Soda....!

I agree that that seems to be the exact motivation. :) I still remember the great Apple Sauce Shortage of June-08. Ah yes those were the days...

My local Wellcome usually stocks it but have not checked recently.

Maybe you can ask one of the bars in LKF, they have to stock up on all sorts of ingredients and I am sure they must know some local suppliers.

Any of the Parknshop group usually stock this, like Thames said probably they have all ran out of stock. I have been looking for a particular brand of bran flakes, they have been out of stock of this for maybe 2 months, it is frustrating !

Well Susie1 there's a thought. Perhaps we could do a deal with DHL and set up an E-bay equivalent for groceries from the global store? Then you would always have your Bran flakes with in twenty four/forty eight hours of order no matter where you lived.

I see my original post was 28 days ago and the shelves of Great, International and Park'n'Shop are still empty of Roses! The bottles we get here in HK come from Australia...perhaps I should just ship in a special order...would I have to pay tax or import duty?

You can buy just about anything in Hong Kong, if you have the time and patience to find it.

Let us have some clarification here....patience to wait for the next shipment.....HK does not have great warehouses of stock cf Tesco's in UK..

Follow up on the lime juice:

Eventually I found Market Place in Repulse Bay (NB I am from the New Territories and the Island is a bit of a mystry to me) and sure enough around 200 bottles of Roses on sale. These were the plastic bottles which come from the UK. I only had room for twelve but that will keep me going for a while.

In the meantime I was talking with a wine importer who was telling me about the two large supermarket chains which essentially control the HK markets and yes....they dictate to the customer what the customer should have..not the other way around. The Roses we used to buy from International, Park and Shop and Great came from Australia...glass bottles. So somewhere along the line there must have been a dispute between the supermarket and the supplier ........ customers be damned.
