I have an AT & T iPhone 3g (not 3gs) that I use in the U.S. that I'd like to use in Hong Kong. Has anyone done anything similar?
I've heard that I can use unlock software to unlock my phone (which can be undone later), then I can buy a SIM card in Hong Kong. Has this worked for anyone?

GSM and 3G are the same everywhere apart from frequencies. AFAIK iPhone is a quad band phone so you can use it here. Certainly you can easily find someone in HK to unlock it, or do it your self.

Since you likely won't have Internet service on your iPhone in HK on a pay as you go card, you could also buy a very cheap unlocked phone on ebay and use that.

You are right you can unlock your AT&T locked iPhone and use a local simcard in HongKong. You can get a permanent unlock and that is nothing wrong...you need not roll back the lock.To unlock an iPhone the remote unlock service would be a better option because,you need not give your mobile to someone else nor do you have any chance to enter the wrong unlock codes.To get such an unlocking service for your iPhone 3G approach http://www.theunlockspot.com/apple-iphone-3g/rs16wp9/ and remove the restriction from the respective network.This will be a permanent unlocking solution.I unlocked my mobile through this way only and did not face any problem.
