Voice recorders for classroom use

I'd like to record samples of my students' speech without sticking a microphone in their faces. Does anyone know if you can get voice recorders that can be used for this? I don't know whether the range would usually be long enough.

You can use handsets, which capable to do voice recording, the good thing to record into phone is, you can email or save into MicroSD.

Yes most recoding devices will have a short range.

See if you can borrow one and try it.

Or go to the store and try it youself from about 50cm away. Do it in a noisy shopping mall and see if you can still distinguish your voice.

Perhaps if it is placed on the desk next to a child, face up, it will not pick up all of the other students.

Somebody is selling a Zoom H2 portable recorder here on AsiaXpat I remember. That is the kind of device you might like to consider. All-in-one and good/high quality, and solid state recording. Check/search the musical instruments...
