The problem with Thailand is the insurgency in Southern part, not Bangkok or Phuket.
Most embassies recommend you not to go.

"We strongly advise you not to travel at this time to the southern provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla or overland to and from the Malaysian border through these provinces due to high levels of ongoing violence in these regions, including terrorist attacks and bombings resulting in deaths and injuries on an almost daily basis. Since January 2004, more than 3,400 people have reportedly been killed and many more injured, including a number of foreigners. If you are in these provinces, you should consider leaving. "

I think that generally these travel warnings are a way for governments to cover their butts.... they put general warnings on all locations that have even the slightest chance of a terrorist attack so that they can point to that if something happens...

Love it, Thailand and Philppines are on the list, Afghanistan is not. Guess where I'm going for my next holiday. This stuff is just c**p. Keep up with the news and make your own decisons - and if you can't, then do what nanny tells you.
