Hi,

I am moving to HK next year. Has anybody got experience driving with foreign license plates?

Would like to drive in HK with my dutch licence plates for one year... Thanks.

First issue is that you would need to pay tax on the value of the vehicle to bring it into HK and it would need to be HK registered. The second problem you have is that you cannot register a LHD car for use.

"And be informed that HK is extremely car-unfriendly."

Yes and no. It really depends where you live and drive to. If you live, say, in Midlevels and work in Central, there is no point in having a car. When you need wheels, public transport and taxis are easier and cheaper. The more urbanized parts of The Island and Kowloon are not typically car friendly, at least not for daily driving.

If, however, you live in NT somewhere and commute to, say, Kowloon Bay, it is a whole other proposition.

We didn't have a car for over a year. Now we do, but only use it on weekends for excursions.
