The student Octopus was discontinued in 2005. It was replaced by the personalized card, which has the person's data (including age and student status) stored. Thus, if there is a student fare for that trip or concession AND card tells the system the owner is a student, the student fare will be deducted instead of the adult fare.
There is (as you know) a children's Octopus which can be used until the child turns 12. When touched it will deduct the children's fare instead of the normal fare. This is not always ½ but is typically much lower than normal.

here is the list of rules from citybus regarding fares (note particularly 2 and 3...) you may have misunderstood the reply from citybus. they likely meant after 4yrs they pay full childs fare, which like the seniors fare, is 1/2 adult up to the nearest 10c until 12 yrs old...this is the same on kmb, but as mentioned, on MTR it may be slightly more or less than 1/2 adult
"Student" means any person aged between 12 and 25 who is currently enrolled on a full-time day course offered by an acceptable institution in Hong Kong. (Students who have not yet reached 26 may apply as an applicant’s age is determined by the date when the application is submitted) and as far as I can tell there is NO concession for students on the buses like there is on the MTR...

Mini buses seem to follow different rules as well. Our local green mini bus does not offer any discount for a child siting in a seat. I assumed a child was 1/2 the listed fare, but when the child octopus is used the full fare is deducted. I suppose each 'seat' has a fixed price regardless of the age of the bum sitting on it!

Student price on the MTR is half price. How is it the bus companies in HK do nothing to help out our students. I for one will be sending KMB and City a very pointed letter. This is just wrong.
