You are eligible to apply for a HKSAR Passport if you are:
a Chinese citizen;
a permanent resident of the HKSAR; and
a holder of a valid Hong Kong permanent identity card.

so the question is, are you willing to renounce your current citizenship and naturalize as Chinese? Alan Zeman (Canadian) and Mike Rowse (UK) have done it...not too many others in HK I suspect..

Hi wiz bang, I do have a permananet REsidenecy but the gov website gave mixed up answers.
I guess i would renounce to my own citizenship especially i am not using it at all and dont think i will again. Hong Kong is home for me.
Funbobby , not many did it, is it by choice or is it of lack of clear regulations in Hong kong

i think alot of expats probably value citizenship in their own country rather than Chinese citizenship...you may be a rare exception...i for one would NEVER give up my citizenship, tho my wife is Chinese and my daughter is dual.

wow...have things (aside from the double tax issue) really gotten that bad in the US? are you saying you support the policies of the PRC (not belittling you, just surprised a bit, your beliefs are as valid as mine or anyones)...

"The usa requires a complicated procedure to renounce" your citizenship. There is also an exit penalty/tax to pay if you do so, but I think this is only if you have tons of money and assets. or so I hope."
Tons of money or not, the basic rule is you have to pay seven years US federal taxes to renounce the citizenship. Same if you want to give up your green card except if you have had the green card less than 8 years.
"I guess i would renounce to my own citizenship especially i am not using it at all and dont think i will again. Hong Kong is home for me."
If you're not being taxed by your home country, there's no reason to renounce that citizenship really. If you are American, global taxation is a killer.
"wow...have things (aside from the double tax issue) really gotten that bad in the US?"
I'd say global taxation is quite enough to renounce US citizenship. It is terrible.

"axpatguy, do you mean I would have to pay 7 years additional?! I mean, 7 years in addition to the normal yearly tax bill I pay every year. sadly, that wouldnt surprise me..."
As I understand it that is the deal.

As far as I know, in HK you can only apply for a HK passport, which is quite different from a PRC passport. One country, two passports, comrades!

My friend who is a Filipino just got her HK passport and her son, born her, now in Praque studying, also got his passport. His father is also a Filipino. I asked my friend about the route of going to obtain one.. she said very easy. go to the right department, they will give u a checklist form and get all the forms and ducument need ready to go and apply. soon they will call you for interview and ask do u speak cantonese? she has been here for almost 20 years but only speak few sentences so she spoke one and the official laugh and the next thing is she received a letter to collect her passport port and her son one came a week later. By the way, she has to give up her Fil passport. Her passport is HKSAR passport. Not china.
