LCD monitor colour fading

ORIGINAL POST

we have a dell lcd monidor about 4-5 years old. starting today the colour started to fade (to whitish colour). it's a bit better when i reboot the computer but basically within 5-10 mins the colour fades so fast it's a bit difficult to see then it stops. my husband uses to to play computer games (and i just use to for office and internet). would this be a problem with the video card? i tried adjusting the colour on the monitor but no difference. or is the monitor dead? i thought they last a lot longer than that (look at the office computers). how do i check which problem is it? any ideas appreciated.

My guess is either the cable or dust.

First step: Check the cable. That's the cheapest part of the setup and most susceptible to damage. Wiggle it a bit and see if there is an improvement.

Second step: Dust. Get the vacuum/hoover and suck at all the vents in the monitor. Seeing as it comes up withing 5-10 mins this may be due to overheating which can come from dust buildup. You can also get a can of compressed air ("Air Cleaner") from a computer store and use that to clean it out (make sure you ALWAYS hold the can upright).

Third step. Open the computer case and check for dust. Use the aforementioned cleaning steps.

Good luck!

I would swap over components if I could. This would help identify where the problem is.

E.G.

If the monitor works OK with another computer, it is the monitor. If another computer works with your monitor, it is not your monitor but something in the PC.
