Does anyone know the name of any good local house renovators. I want to build a glass house on my roof. Has anyone had this done and could you recommend anyone?

Are you based on the Island or Kowloon side? If you don't already have a glass structure on your roof then you'll probably best get a contractor in and not a renovator.

If you're on Kowloon side, there is a good glass house/aluminum construction company I used from Tai Po to build mine, you can speak to Ms. Suen on 26060032 and perhaps ask her to send a guy over to take measurements for a free quotation or fax her the size of the strutcure you want to get an idea of cost?

Before I had mine built, I spoke to about 10 different contractors and although Ms. Suen's price wasn't the cheapest by about $2,000 (nor was it the most expensive by a long shot), why I chose this particular contractor was after visiting their shop I could clearly see they specialised in this field with the materials they had around the place and I was confident that they would do a clean and professional job after showing me pictures of all the projects they already done (I'd rather pay that little bit extra for professionals than for someone I'd be unconfident in by saving a fraction less). Here you are dealing with the makers and not middle men.

Good luck!

Thanks Riceman,

You're full of good suggestions as I see you answered my cable inquiry as well. I'm in the New Territories so will try your contractor. Thanks again.

Word of caution Jillybean................

Under the BD (Building Department) Regs, glass or any other type of structures, which have not been subject to planning approval, are technically classed as illegal structures.

Many, many people do however have them built on the roofs of village houses and take a chance that BD will not spot the structure, which if they do they will impose a demolition enforcement notice.

Before spending lots of money on the glass room you should do a little research in the area where you live to see if BD are active, not many people know this but BD have pledged to address the problem of illegal structure in HK and they have to date imposed more than 20,000 enforcement notices.

I also have a glass structure in my garden, which up until now has been fine, however my neighbour was recently issued with an enforcement notice to remove a similar structure.

Just thought it might to usefule for you to be aware of the legalities...........best advice is do your homework and see whats going on in your area and dont spend too much $$$ as you might one day have to tear it all down - strike a balance you feel comfortable with between cost and risk.

Thanks for the advice and I do know this so am planning to build a structure that will easily come down or which I can take doors off to make it legal. It seems to be a bit of a game in the villages. The order comes, the doors come off for the inspection, the doors go back on when the inspection is over!! I think that's why most people build the structure with sliding glass doors.
