Food for babies with intolerances

Hi - We've just moved to Hong Kong and discovered that our son may have a lactose intolerance (he is breaking out with eczema). It has been suggested that a goat based formula might be worth a try - specifically Nanny Care (brand.) Does anyone know where I might be able to buy products like this, since it seems impossible to order them into HK on line? Any pointers very much appreciated....

On line ordering for most things in HK is not a big channel. You will find most things. You will just have to hunt for them a bit. Also people on this forum tend to collectively know where to find most things. ;)

In general, I would say most people who have special needs like this don't have major issues finding stuff.

I don't know about formula. Our daughter became intolerant later so that wasn't an issue. But there are plenty of soy milks and rice milks that work fine.

If you do find it hard getting the goats milk as suggested, you could try Isomil Advance (soy protein formula) which is milk and lactose free and is available in all supermarkets/Mannings/Watsons etc.

My son has problems with milk and mild eczema and seems to be doing well with Isomil.

Before you get too excited about lactose intolerance, have you had your child examined by a proper specialist? I say "proper" because it has become fashionable in recent times for people to consult so-called nutrition experts who do all sorts of tests and come up with a variety of "intolerances". Lactose seems to be popular along with wheat. Call me cynical, but humans have been coping perfectly well with lactose and wheat (and whatever else they come up with) for thousands of years. I just don't buy it.

I agree with having a specialist test for intolerance. However saying that "humans have been coping perfectly well..." is not quite the case. Millions of people have always had these issues. The way they coped is either put up with the symptoms or adjust their diets.

Lactose intolerance typically manifests itself with stomach pains and lots of farting. Our daughter had both these daily. When we took away the dairy it all went away within 48 hours and did not come back.
