My husband and I have just moved to Hong Kong and are looking for an apartment to rent in Tai Wai or Shatin. We are looking for a 1 or 2 furnished apartment for $7000-12000. We would prefer not to use an agent so any suggestions as to where to look would be great!

and what you can do and a lot of people do is go the village or area you want to rent and just ask people living there if they know of any places up for rent!

Very difficult to find a furnished apartment and your budget is tight. Options for that are a village house, and there are many around or one of the older or smaller apartments. Place like Granville Gardens, where there are quite a few expats, has just recently gone out of your price range, rentals and renewals there have gone crazy.
As above, advice would be to use the reputable agents. You wont get anywhere near as good a deal or even range as the established local agents but unless you're great at Cantonese then you have no choice.
