I'm thinking of getting an Iphone. Just wondering, if I were to get it from an Apple store will I have to change my service provider to 3?
I do not plan to use the Net much and am currently happy with my package which is $130 pm.

you can buy the handset without the contract, if you can't use any other phone network you can get iphones unblocked at lots of phone shops or diy. I am using a uk iphone here.

Just a note. In HK all iPhones are sold unlocked so you are able to use the SIM card from any provider here.

As previous posters have said, iPhones in HK are unlocked so you can use any provider. Of course, 3 won't sell you one unless you sign up for a 3 plan. ;)
To expand on startup: First you install iTunes on your computer, if you don't have it already. Then you insert your SIM card in the iPhone and connect it to your computer. Finally follow the steps in iTunes. You will need to create an iTunes store account. It will then work for calls.
You will need to call your provider to get a data plan unless you have one already. You will also have to set the APN (access point name) in your iPhone to use data. For PCCW the APN is "pccw".
I'm not entirely sure but I think you need a data plan even if you only use WiFi. In any case, do use WiFi at home if available. Faster and cheaper (assuming you don't have an unlimited data plan).
PCCW data plan prices from memory. $40/mth for 30 megs/mth (and quite a bit per meg for excess). $320/mth for unlimited. If you mostly use WiFi, 30 megs is actually ample.
