Football onTV in HKG

I love to watch football on TV. English Premier League, European Championship and the World Cup Finals. How to do this in Hong Kong?


Now TV have EPL but no European Championship and they told me they will not have the World Cup Finals. What do I need to do to get all three? At a reasonable cost. I am considering having a satelite dish put on my roof at a cost of $4800 so I will be able to get a South African feed that shows all the games. I live in a village near the borer so I am also wondering if I would be able to pick up the mainland China TV channels. I know some of them show EPL and will also have the World Cup Finals.

(Hong Kong - November 24, 2009) i-CABLE Communications Ltd. today (Tuesday) announced its new service package for the Barclay's Premier League (BPL), for which it has just been awarded exclusive broadcasting rights in Hong Kong for the three seasons 2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13.


Details of the BPL Package are as follows:


380 - all 380 matches of each season will be broadcast.

138 - at least 138 matches per season will be broadcast in HD format on the hd201 and hd202 channels.

80 - An early bird promotion offer of $80 per month.


Early bird promotion offer - during the promotion period, subscribers may subscribe to the BPL Package at the discount rate of $80 a month (24-month term), under which:


- Subscribers will pay a monthly fee of $40 before August 1, 2010 to enjoy the hd201 and hd202 channels to watch world class sports programmes, including top soccer actions such as 2010 FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, German Bundesliga, and other non-soccer premier sports events, such as PGA Tour.


- Enjoy the early bird promotional rate of $80 a month from August 1, 2010 to watch all the exciting programmes of the BPL Package.


Present HD service subscribers enrolling during the early bird promotion period will enjoy the $80 per month fee for the BPL Package from August 1, 2010.


(CABLE TV Basic Package Service monthly fee will be $259, effective December 1, 2009)

Does I Cable tv broadcast the matches in english commentary? And if so will this be from the Sky UK tv broadcasting commentary team?


Same thing for the world cup, who will be the commentary team and will it be in UK english?

rosa71 - yes that is correct. Only in Hong Kong would the goverment let such a ridiculous situation occur where the rights swing back between the 2 service providers every few years. Asia's world city my Arsene Wenger.

Why would the government interfere in two private bidders bidding for rights to televise a sporting event?


If you want to be angry with someone it should be NOW, or iCable, they are basically using the rights to attract new subscribers and don't care whether once they have signed people up, to provide a continuation of the programming for which some of their customers initially signed up.


They should buy those rights for far longer terms and if anything customers should revolt, which they count on not happening.


Its not the governments place to dictate what programming or content should be provided, so long as its within the law, and really what you are suggesting is that they should start legislating what private services are procured by private companies based on the objectives of football fans.


I like capitalism and the free market thank you very much.
