Indeed 21st Dec this year is solstice which here is a time for families to get together for family dinner, but that dinner maybe a day before or after depending on family situations.

Also celebrated or followed in many other countries and across all religions in various ways.

Evildeeds,

I used to work for a big corporation in Hong Kong, and the local staff were all allowed to go home early on the night of this dinner - which seems to indicate that there is a set date for it.

woods - there is a set day for the solstice for which most other companies do not allow staff off early for.

However individual families may have a day before or after depending on their situation. For instance my family will be having dinner tomorrow as my wife's brother will be working tonight. This is not unusual for families in HK to do, and again they will do similar at other festivals if required.

Solstice itself is either on 21 / 22 depending on which year.
