Setting a business and trademarking a name

ORIGINAL POST

Any recommendations on how to go about doing this and where to go to set this up? I have a permanent ID card etc. But I am noticing just to register a business name seems to be quite costly although someone informed me that it didn't cost as much as I have been qouted. However, he had forgot how to go about setting it up so was unable to lead me to the right direction.

Also, I would like to trademark a name I would use to sell my products. Also any recommendations on how to go about this. Trademark name also seems to be quite costly. Any advice would be great

Thanks

[UPDATE] Please note that fee quotes stated in historic postings may be out-of-date.

Registration of a ‘business name’ is easy and not expensive at all – you go to Inland Revenue and pay fees (less than HK$500). The downside is that you will be personally liable for all business carried out under such name. To avoid personal liability, you would be well advised to set up a limited liability company. Our fee for Hong Kong company set-up is US$1,000.

For trademark registration, costs would depend on the name and products you have in mind. Please contact weirlaw@hongkonglaw.com for more details.
