Any advice on what international dialing service to choose ? ( eg :0060 / 001 , 0090 etc etc) . My existing service (1589) just advised that their service is being terminated w.e.f 01 Jan 2010.

Same here....used to be 001 and now for a long time 0060 with the same company PCCW. Since I've been with PCCW my whole life, wonder do you have to be using their station in order to have access to their 0060 service?

We have no landline. Just a Skype subscription. Less than US$10/month gives you unlimited calls to 26 countries including HK. And no, you don't need a computer, just an Internet connection and a "Skype phone".
You can get also get one or more phone numbers in any of several countries. So grandma in wherever can make a local call and it rings on the Skype phone in HK.

Skype calls are great as long as you are happy to compromise on the quality. Line clarity can be very poor at times with noticeable delays - so may not be the best solution for speaking to grandma as things could get very confusing.

boddingtons, that depends on the connection at either end. I have found that in HK, on PCCW, 99% of the time we get no noticeable lag and excellent clarity. No problem speaking to grandma at least once a week. Skype to Skype calls sometimes aren't great, but Skype to landline/cell calls are on par with traditional phone service.
We have on rare occasions experienced lag, but that's really only on some holiday weekends. Wait five minutes and it is gone. Well worth the savings.
Your results may, of course, vary. But it's easy to test using a computer and your existing Internet connection...

That is true. Quality is worse when the connections is busy with the kids playing their online games. Or grandma doing the same at the other end.

Thank you all for the inputs. I have signed up with 1674 (http://www.tmstream.com/tms_idd.html). The customer service was outstanding . Tested the sound quality , which was great !

regarding 0060, just found out that their rates to India are approx HKD 13 per minute , compared to HKD 0.60 per minute with 1674 !!! Wow ! that is some difference. PCCW sure is out of the market on this !!!
