3 years ago I got internet connection with NWT. After 2, 6 month contracts, I moved house and told them and returned the equipment and terminated the agreement orally by phone. Now, they have tracked me down saying I owe them something like 2600 and are going to take me to court. My question is this, I was under the impression that I had 6 month contracts with them and had terminated the contract. I phoned them several times but couldnt get through or speak to anyone with good enough english. All of their correspondence with me was in Chinese.
What can I do?

they will not go to court because just to register a case cost more than 3000 RMB. My suggestion is do not pay and do not bother. they can't do anything.

Have no fear of the court. if the facts of your case is exactly as you say, then you will win in court. Unless you signed a contract that was in fact much longer than you thought, the act of returning the equipment, and the company accepting the return is very solid legal evidence that the contract has been terminated, and no new contract should be renewed without your explicit consent. If you did not sign a contract that states otherwise, the judge will find in your favor.
